MCP vs plugin

Definition: A plugin is an extension specific to a given platform, whereas MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that connects any compatible model to tools and data.

A plugin stays locked inside the ecosystem that defined it; an MCP server, by contrast, is reusable by any client supporting the protocol, without rewriting. MCP thus aims for interoperability, where plugins remain specific.
