Letting Agents Touch the Physical World, Carefully

Anthropic and HHMI Janelia Research Campus have jointly developed the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a shared specification now in research preview for a first group of scientific labs and advanced manufacturers. MHS gives an AI agent a standardized way to operate multiple lab and factory instruments in parallel — microscopes, liquid handlers, robotic arms — for tasks ranging from routine drug-discovery experiments to laser calibration on a quantum computer. Anthropic frames the underlying problem as an integration bottleneck: because most devices don't natively communicate with each other, wiring up a lab or manufacturing floor typically takes specialists weeks or months of bespoke work, which MHS is designed to cut to hours or minutes, in turn enabling round-the-clock autonomous experiments where an agent reasons through each step, adjusts parameters in real time, and in some cases recovers from hardware errors without a person intervening. The standard is model-agnostic and works over protocols such as MCP with any device that has a programmable interface.

Funding Outside Scrutiny of Wellbeing and Usage

Anthropic is launching a $5 million grant program to fund independent researchers — clinicians, psychologists, and methodologists among them — who will build open-source evaluations of how AI affects user wellbeing, with Anthropic providing direct funding, model access, and technical support while grantees work fully independently and publish results any developer can use.
