Anthropic Backs Wellbeing Research as Claude Code Polishes Its Guardrails

The same release added an Auto Mode tab inside /permissions, so users can directly view and edit the classifier rules that decide when Claude Code is allowed to act without asking, plus a minor ergonomic touch: a wall-clock completion time now appended to the end-of-turn duration line.
Beyond the numbered releases, Claude Code's weekly changelog introduced /design, a research preview that brings the artboard-based workflow from Claude's design surface into the CLI and Desktop app: Claude drafts several editable artboards for a UI and then implements whichever one is chosen. Desktop also gained an auto-continue option that, once checked on a usage-limit card, automatically retries an interrupted turn as soon as the session limit resets, removing a manual restart step.

A shared-infrastructure error spike, resolved
Anthropic's status page reported, and then resolved, a stretch of elevated errors hitting requests to several models at once, including Mythos 5, Fable 5, and Opus 5. That the incident spanned multiple, unrelated model tiers points to a fault somewhere shared in the serving stack rather than a defect in any single model. The update stated the cause had been identified and a fix was underway, consistent with Anthropic's usual practice of confirming resolution before detailing root cause.

Wellbeing, watermarking, and biosecurity: Anthropic's safety ledger
The day's most substantial official announcement was a $5 million grant program funding independent research into how Claude's use affects user wellbeing. Anthropic frames the need for this bluntly: wellbeing is unusually hard to evaluate because, unlike checking a single reply for accuracy, judging appropriateness can require the full arc of a long conversation. Anthropic's own example: a user in distress may not disclose thoughts of self-harm right away, and advice on diet and exercise that is reasonable for most people asking about weight loss could be actively harmful for someone with a documented history of disordered eating. Grantees will work independently of Anthropic and publish open-source evaluations and benchmarks that any developer can use, an explicit attempt to bring outside clinicians, psychologists, and methodologists into what Anthropic describes as a field still short of accepted standards.
Anthropic also detailed the mechanics of the text watermarking it is rolling out to comply with the EU AI Act's content-labeling requirement in effect since August 2, a step other major model developers are taking under the same Code of Practice. Anthropic's description stresses what the watermark does not do: no extra tokens or cost, no visible change or hidden characters, no information identifying a specific person, organization, or chat, and no Claude-specific signature. Mechanically, it steers the random tie-breaks a model already makes between near-equivalent word choices (its own example: overcast versus grey) using a key instead of arbitrary randomness, leaving a statistical pattern detectable only to whoever holds that key. Alongside this, Anthropic published a note on improvements made to Fable 5's biology-related safeguards, continuing its practice of pairing compliance and capability news with model-specific safety updates.
